Maileon is originally a German platform, and this is reflected in its privacy features. For example, within Maileon, it is possible to turn off the tracking of Opens & Clicks across the entire account, for each mailing, or even per contact. This prepares you for potential future privacy regulations, such as those already in place in Germany.

Good to know: By default, the measurement of opens & clicks is based on the permission level of a contact in Maileon. This means that a contact must have the permission level “DOI with individual tracking (DOI+)”.

This article explains how you can influence the tracking level per mailing. These settings can also be set as a default at the account level.

Use the most detailed tracking per contact, for which permission has been given

With this setting in the Basic Settings of your mailing, it is possible to determine per user whether or not opens & clicks are measured. This depends on the permission “Double opt-in plus individual user tracking”. If a contact has this permission level, the opens & clicks for this contact will be measured.

See https://support.maileon.nl/nl/support/solutions/articles/80001164974-permissieniveaus-maileon for the available permission levels.

If a contact has a different (lower) permission level, the opens & clicks for these contacts are anonymized in the results and cannot be traced back to specific contacts.

No tracking

This means no results are measured from the mailings, except for the number of sent emails.

Useful for completely anonymous surveys or other privacy-sensitive campaigns.

Anonymous tracking

With this setting, the statistics cannot be traced back to contacts. In other words, you will see all opens & clicks, but fully anonymized. This gives contacts the privacy to open and click emails, but no actions can be taken based on the opens & clicks.

Useful for government institutions, universities, or organizations that place high value on privacy.

Example of anonymized results

Track on an individual user basis

This overrides the user setting and tracks opens & clicks for all contacts in the database, regardless of the permission level of the contacts.

When setting this option, you will receive the following warning:

"Tracking on an individual user level overrides the individual consent method and the consent extension for this sending. This may lead to legal issues due to missing consents and is therefore not recommended."

Marketing Automation Flows

If tracking of opens & clicks is disabled for contacts or mailings, this data cannot be used in marketing automation flows – for example, for splits based on opens and clicks.
